Songs of Love and Experience
Music by Gary S. Fagin
Mezzo-soprano Kate Tombaugh is featured across four tracks in composer Gary S. Fagin’s new album, Songs of Love and Experience. Featuring a collection of songs designed to engage listeners in a thoughtful way, sometimes light-hearted, sometimes contemplative, other times heart wrenching. The album brings together an exceptional ensemble of vocalists, including soprano Christine Jobson, tenor Scott Murphree, and pianist Alan Johnson.
Kate Tombaugh’s voice anchors four powerful songs on the album: “Ever and After,” “Every Day I Sing,” “Prayer,” and “Giving and Taking.”
Full album is now available on Spotify and Apple Music.

Ever and After is a love song with a whimsical sensibility, composed as a birthday gift for Gary’s wife, Nancy Hume.

Every Day I Sing is from Charlotte: Life? Or Theater?, a full-length stage work about the German/Jewish painter, Charlotte Salomon, whose life work portrays her life and times in Berlin and the south of France before and during World War II. This song is sung by Charlotte’s stepmother, who, in real life, was a celebrated opera star in Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s; she describes how she is forced to use her art to survive.

Prayer is from an orchestral work, The Struggle to Forgive, inspired by the shootings at Sandy Hook. I interviewed a number of people who had experience with gun violence, including a woman who counseled parents who lost children at Sandy Hook. I asked her what she took away from that experience, and she said it was their struggle to forgive, meaning not their struggle to forgive the perpetrator, but their struggle to forgive themselves for not being there to protect their children.

Giving and Taking, is a rumination on the push-and-pull we all experience in a relationship.
